Sunday, March 21st is Down Syndrome Awareness Day. To celebrate this day, the Life Skills Classes will be sponsoring a Rock Your Socks Day this Friday. Please wear loud, crazy, mismatched socks to celebrate the uniqueness of each individual. The world is a better place when each of us expresses what makes us one-of-a-kind. Also, look through the halls for posters of special people with Down Syndrome who have accomplished great things!
For Kaiya Hintz and Trista Nichols’ Harvest Team project they are wanting to bring
more awareness of different types of cancers that are not as well known, yet are the deadliest to those who are diagnosed with them. There will be a donation bin set up each Friday of March, near the front doors, where you can drop off gifts for cancer patients. This can include any warm wear, blankets, socks, gum, hand sanitizer, lotion, chapstick, activity
books, journals, or hard candy. There will be a list on the bin with more donation ideas. For
the month of March we will be focusing on 4 of the top deadliest cancers, one for each week
in March. At the end of the week on Friday we encourage the students of FCHS to wear the
color of the cancer’s ribbon to bring awareness and support for the cause.
This week we will be focusing on colon cancer where the ribbon color in royal
blue. A healthy diet that includes vegetables, fruits and whole grain fiber and is low in fats
is associated with a lower risk of colon cancer. Avoiding tobacco and heavy alcohol use can
decrease the risk of colon cancer. Regular physical activity and maintaining a normal body
weight are beneficial as well. Don’t forget to bring in any donations that you wish to give for
cancer patients. There will be a list hanging up on the bin near the front doors where the
donations can be placed.
